What is Bonsai?

Bonsai is a tree or shrub grown in a container. Though seldom exceeding 30", it is the bonsai artists job to make us believe that we are looking at a miniaturized version of an old tree in nature. When looking at bonsai, if you get the feeling that you would like to sit under that tree, then the artist has done his job.  The word ‘bonsai’ is formed from two words, ‘bon’ meaning tray or dish and ‘sai’ meaning tree or plant, so its' literal translation is ‘tree planted in a dish’.  A bonsai is, then, a tree—a miniaturized tree— grown in a dish; resembling in all respects its larger counterpart in nature.

I have been developing my trees for last 7-10 years, and am very proud of the collection. It takes a great deal of time to maintain the shape.

Some the major items:

  • From April to October the trees are watered daily, with very hot dry days requring two waterings.
  • They are wintered in a cold frame.
  • Every 1-3 trees years, the roots are pruned and repoted.
  • During the growing season, the trees are often shaped

Wood Working

Another interest would be Wood Working. I have a small shop in my basement, when time allowing, I enjoy joinery, finishing, choosing the challenging. One of better accompliments is the front facade of our Bed & Breakfast www.doylecottage.com. The columns are mitered, truncated pyramids. The diamond shaped balusters were my son-in-laws idea and the columns were my lovely wife (Patty) concept. They were built in the shop to the correct dimensions and intstalled at the site fitting perfectly. What do you think Norm Abrams!!
